BUILDING A COMMUNITY GATHERING PLACE
For the past seven years, I have had
the honor and pleasure of working with the Board of
Directors, Phoenix Monarchs Alumni, volunteers, and
community in building a community and cultural center that
serves as a venue where the community can learn, experience
and share in the diverse cultural heritage of African and
African Americans.
Thanks to a partnership established
with City of Phoenix’s Office of Arts and Culture through
the 2001 Municipal Bond program, the Cultural Center began
transforming one of the few remaining African American
historic landmarks. Bond funds invested allowed for capital
improvements such as electrical upgrades, exterior landscape
work, corridor lighting, flooring, ceiling enhancements and
most importantly addressing fire protection and code
improvements.
With the award of 2006 bond funds, we
are the midst of moving forward with additional
infrastructure improvements needed for the Cultural Center
to realize its goal of becoming a mixed-use facility that
houses a museum, auditorium, library, and gallery and
meeting space for the community.
Our goals are ambitious! Our
renovation team Sun Eagle Corporation (general contractor)
and Michael Baker Inc. (architectural firm) are working hard
to prepare the site for a Grand Opening Weekend November
2008.
This
community investment will become a symbol of pride for
future generations to enjoy. We invite you to come join our
family.
